The photograph is in a book with a description in French: "A 80 kilomètres au sud de la mer Morte se trouve l'emplacement d'une ville jadis célèbre, Pétra. Des ruines de tout genre, temples, palais, églises, citernes, ponts, arcs de triomphe, amphithéâtres, tombeaux, se succèdent sous les pas du voyageur étonné. Tout autour, des montagnes abruptes formant couronne servent de fortifications et semblent vouloir en défendre l'accès; de fait, on ne peut y accéder que par des gorges très étroites. (Voir les planches 3 et 10.) Cette ceinture de rochers est ornée d'une multitade de tombeaux taillés dans le roc vif. Les photographies de ce fascicule permettent de s'en faire une idée exacte, en même temps qu'elles donnent la physionomie des ruines." A small "19" is printed beneath the text.
