- A man sits on a white horse while a second man stands nearby. The man on the horse holds a long pole while the other holds a rifle. A long, low black tent is in the background.
- The photograph is in a book with a typed description in French: "Le Bédouin, descendant d'Ismaël, est musulman en apparence; l'élevage du bétail et le brigandage sont ses occupations, mais il est aussi hospitalier qui pillard. Il passe sa vie à cheval, laisse flotter sa chevelure et ne connait d'autre habitation que la tente de poil de chèvre. Les tentes noires de Kédar ont été chantées par Salomon. La loi du talion est le premier article de son code; il a horreur de toute civilisation, méprise le fellah syrien qui ose travailler la terre, et se glorifie de son nom de Bédaouy, habitant du désert. Il aime le chant, la poésie, les recits, la guerre, et obéit à un cheik. S'il meurt dans un combat, on dit: 'Il est mort.' S'il meurt de maladie, on dit: 'Il a crevé!'
