[Inquisition instructions]

Description
Copy of a letter dated Madrid, 26 July 1801, from Grand Inquisitor Ramón José de Arce ordering all officials of the Inquisition to meet annually to hear instructions issued by previous Inquisitors (f. 18r-20r), preceded by copies of those instructions (f. 1r-17v). The earliest instructions copied date to 1498; subsequent copied documents refer to 1607 (f. 16v) and 1736 (f. 17v). Where three leaves have been cut out (before f. 9), comparison to similar instruction texts suggests that the text before and after the missing leaves is almost continuous (f. 8v-9r), though written by different hands or at different times. Many of the items in the instructions have No or Si written in the margin next to them. Most of the items concern procedures for tribunals and prisons.
